About the Music

Are they Blues? Country? Folk? Pop? Rock? Craig Jameson’s songs and instrumentals express some, all, or none of these influences.  He is usually as surprised as his listeners by what he composes next. While there are many distinctive and revered musical genres in the world, Craig has never felt the need to restrict his writing to any of them.

Though there are no clear boundaries to his explorations, they all spring from a common source:  the rich musical groundwork laid  by American and UK artists from the 1960s to 1980s.  This amazing time of experimentation and discovery saw bands as diverse as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Elton John, Pink Floyd, and Yes, releasing unique musical visions next to singer-songwriters like James Taylor, Neil Young, Carole King, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell.  Added to this list was the profoundly original work of Motown, progressive jazz, reggae, and funk artists

This is the eclectic universe of music that inspires Craig and echoes through his writing. The work ranges from the “soft-and-quiet” of story telling to the “hard-and-loud” of  all-out rock.  Each piece answers a unique calling and flies its own freak flag.

If you enjoy surprises, musical variety, and challenging your tastes in musical expression, you’ll find this catalogue of singles well worth exploring.

 About the Artist

A lifelong guitar player, Craig Jameson has spent many years creating, recording, and performing original music.  During his high-school years in Southern California, he founded a six-piece cover band called Supper's Ready and performed for school dances and  rock clubs throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. This three-year enterprise culminated in the band's opening for Van Halen at the Pasadena Convention Center.  Faced with  the  break-up of this band in the late 1970s, and unable to find compatible musical colleagues to continue with,  Craig turned to the study and practice of architecture to provide a reliable income.

After graduating from Cornell University's Graduate School of Architecture in 1987, Craig accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Here he taught design courses for two years before returning to California to practice architecture with a prominent Los Angeles design firm.  His guitars accompanied him throughout these transition years and he spent weeknights and weekends playing and composing--documenting  promising original material on hand-held recorders.

In 1993 Craig reunited with one of his high-school band mates, Bill Lawrence , and together they developed a set of Craig's original songs under the banner “Ghosts of the Open Road."  These high-energy, “road-rock” pieces were recorded in Hollywood by Detroit drummer-producer Jimmy Hunter and released in 1995 on the team's  independent label as a seven-song CD entitled “Rockola.”   Featuring performances by legendary bassists Bob Birch (Elton John, Keith Emerson, Marc Bonilla) and Lance Morrison (Alanis Morissette, Rod Stewart, Mike Campbell),  this CD enjoyed limited success as a nationwide indie release to college radio stations--with singles charting in the College Music Journal next to those of Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam.  Local radio station KLOS featured the entire album on a  late-night  special and the nationally syndicated radio program, “Instrumentals of Rock” named Vegas Bound their “Instrumental of the Month” during the summer of '96.

Despite these early successes, achieving wider recognition (and income!) from this work proved to be beyond his means, and Craig turned his attention to his architectural practice to pay the bills.

Fast forward 30 years.  In the fall of 2023, Craig retired from his Culver City, CA  architectural firm  to devote himself fully to his musical calling.  With the encouragement of friends and music-industry professionals, he is now recording and releasing  compositions he has  enjoyed privately for decades. These selections can be found below.

Composing and producing  songs is a labor of love that comes from Craig's heartfelt belief in their quality and importance as works of art.  It's been said that every song has a life of its own.  Craig hopes that some of his songs can share their lives with you.
